What pulled you towards engineering as a career?
I was academically strong in math and science which put me on the path towards engineering. But it was the construction aspect of engineering that was the most enticing. To see a project move from development plans to being built has been the most satisfying.
Land Development has become your specialty – why does this interest you?
I like the fast pace and type of engineering work that results in a final built project. Study and analysis is another important arm of engineering, but my interests lie in the design that results in something you can see and feel. It really gives a sense of accomplishment when you can see your designs come to life.
What benefits do you see in working for Penco Engineering?
The smaller company feel appeals to me. I like wearing more hats, interacting with staff and making a difference. I’ve worked for small, mid-sized and large firms and I prefer the size of Penco and the opportunities that comes with that.
How has technology affected your business?
Technology is a benefit in many ways, but primarily it helps our communication, which is critical for a sound engineering design. A picture really is worth a thousand words, and being able to show plans or photos to help clarify the design intent is invaluable. Technology has allowed that communication to flourish in multiple ways, either through the use of advanced software, or as simple as a tablet device that can be used literally anywhere.
If you have one piece of advice for someone starting out in engineering, what would it be?
Learn everything you can from whoever or wherever you can. Don’t become complacent. One of the great things about this work is there is always something new to learn – a new solution, technology, or method to performing your work. It is not a career that stays the same, and change is constant, which keeps it fun and exciting.
